The July farm walk will start 2pm at Trish and Bruno Gabbana’s farm at 161 Knobby Glen Rd. Kandanga, and adjourn to Kandanga Hall (Main St Kandanga, opposite the school) at 3.30 pm.
Our monthly Farm Walk will be held this coming Sunday, 26th July. The topic of this month’s walk is “Planning Your Production”. We will be looking at the process of Succession Planting – planning your vegetable and short-term fruit crops to stage the harvest over a longer period and in regular supply.
Trish and Bruno Gabbana have been supplying weekly market stalls for more than 25 years, over which time they have developed a planting schedule that ensures a predictable, weekly harvest of a large variety of vegetables. Trish will talk about seasonal planting guidelines, quantities and harvesting tips to prolong and enhance the crop.
Following the Farm Walk, we will adjourn to Kandanga Hall to continue the discussion and some theories on planning successional production. To finish, there will be a meeting with interested growers to discuss a proposal to ensure regular supply of some selected lines for weekly orders.
The aim of this session is to construct a schedule that will give growers more advanced notice of what produce may be required each week over a given period. As part of this process, we will discuss succession planting of vegetables and short-season fruits to meet these targets.
We will look at the buying patterns of sales made through the Co-op at markets, family boxes and other regular orders over the past 2 years, with some forward predictions of requirements with an expanded customer base.
We ask that you bring a plate to share for an early evening meal (“Pot Luck!”) There is a kitchen available, so we can heat up items if needed
