“In Retrospect: the Mary River” is a collaboration between the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee and film production company Goorie Vision.
The Mary River: Stories of the past, wisdom for the future
The film features a collection of stories from pre-European times to the present day highlighting significant moments in history that reflect our relationship to the river, its tributaries and the catchment as a whole.
Stories include tales of giant Mary River cod and lungfish, and stories s of droughts, floods, farming practices, the bunya festival, bullock teams, gold mining, the discovery of the Mary River turtle and community opposition to the Traveston Crossing dam.
The goal of the project is to share the fascinating stories of how people in the catchment have used and related to the river and her tributaries. This will encourage people to appreciate how special our part of the world is and to reflect on their own connection with their local waterway.
The film will be shown at the outdoor cinema of the Choo Choo Bar at Dagun Railway Station, starting about 7.00 pm. The Choo Choo bar opens at 6pm. Come along and support the Dagun Community Group by enjoying a glass or two of wine and a hot pizza, and learn some of the stories and history of this area. Copies of the DVD and other publications from the MRCCC will be on sale on the night.
